Welcome to GeoNet - the official source of geological hazard information for New Zealand.

Freely available web services. Please ensure you have read and understood our Data Policy and Disclaimer before using any of these services and applications.

Attribution

All of the data collected by the GeoNet project is freely available. If you use it please give attribution in accordance with our Data Policy and be aware of the Disclaimer. If you publish a scientific paper that uses GeoNet data, please let us know and we will include it on our list of Citations.

Consuming the Services

We use caching for the web site and services. We dynamically manage the cache content to make sure that it is up to date as soon as we have new earthquake information available. If you're polling the web services for some purpose please do not add extra parameters to the query in an attempt to subvert the caching. We would prefer that you poll more frequently than manipulate the URL. We would prefer not to have to rate limit the services so please use them appropriately.

Rounding for Display

The data available via the web services is not rounded, it is stored at the precision used in the calculations. This says nothing about the accuracy of the data. We strongly recommend that for display purposes you round the values to the following precision.

  • Magnitude: one dp (%.1f).
  • Latitude: two dp (%.2f).
  • Longitude: two dp (%.2f).
  • Depth: zero dp - sigfigs only (%.0f).
